Precious Metal Recovery & Refining System

— Turnkey Precious Metal Recovery & Refining System

A Precious Metal Recovery & Refining System is an integrated turnkey line that pulls gold, silver and platinum-group metals out of low-grade, mixed and often hazardous secondary resources — electronic scrap, anode slime, spent catalysts, plating waste and process residues — and refines them into certified bullion in one continuous, closed-loop plant. YuSai combines mechanical liberation, thermal enrichment, hydrometallurgical extraction and electrolytic refining with full off-gas and wastewater treatment, so a single installation delivers overall precious-metal recovery above 95% and finished products at Au 99.99%, Ag 99.99% and Pt/Pd ≥ 99.95%, with an in-house recovery rate that lets recyclers stop shipping value out to third-party refineries. Every line is sized from your actual feed assay, factory-tested as skid modules, and commissioned on site by our own metallurgical engineers — from pilot units to industrial refineries.

Product Overview

The Precious Metal Recovery & Refining System is built for the material that conventional refineries turn away: complex, dilute and mixed streams in which precious metals are locked inside plastics, ceramics, base-metal matrices and spent solutions. Instead of treating recovery and refining as two separate businesses, YuSai engineers them as one continuous route, so metal liberated at the front end of the plant is never re-lost before it reaches the electrolytic cell at the back end.

The line works in four physical and chemical regimes. Mechanical liberation dismantles, shreds, crushes and classifies incoming material, using magnetic, eddy-current and air separation to split a metal-rich fraction from plastics, fibre and aluminium. Thermal enrichment then removes organics by pyrolysis and carbonisation and, where the feed is heavily diluted, smelts and converts it at 1200–1500 °C so that base metals report to slag while the precious metals concentrate into a molten alloy. That alloy is water-broken into granules and becomes the feed for the hydrometallurgical stage, where gold stripping, aqua-regia, chloride or nitric-parting chemistry dissolves the target metals and solvent extraction with P204 / P507 / C272, ion exchange, activated carbon, cementation and selective precipitation split a mixed liquor into clean single-metal streams. Finally, electrolytic refining sets fineness on Wohlwill-type gold cells, high-current-density silver cells and rotating-cathode or pulsed electrowinning units, and the resulting powder or cathode metal is melted and cast — under vacuum or inert gas where the product is destined for market — into bars, granules and shot.

Alongside the metal chain runs an environmental chain that is not an add-on: NOₓ and acid-mist scrubbers, condensers, an alkali-pH polishing loop, wastewater neutralisation and residue dewatering are integrated into the same skid package, so off-gas, effluent and slags leave the plant within discharge limits and every trace of precious metal captured in scrubber and filter streams is routed back into the circuit rather than lost to the drain.

The result is a compact, PLC-controlled recovery refinery that turns variable, low-grade, high-hazard waste into stable, market-tradeable metal — owned and operated by the recycler rather than by an outside refiner.

Application Scenarios

The system is specified for any operation that generates, collects or trades precious-metal-bearing material and wants to convert it into saleable certified metal on its own site.

  • E-waste and PCB recycling plants — recover gold, silver, palladium and copper from dismantled boards, connectors, pins and component scrap instead of selling them as a low-value concentrate. Output: Au / Ag / Pd / Cu bullion and cathode.
  • Urban-mining and WEEE consolidators — upgrade mixed and shredded electronic fractions into a smeltable precious-metal alloy on site. Output: granulated PM alloy plus separated plastics and aluminium.

Process Flow

The line runs as a staged, closed-loop sequence. Mechanical and thermal stages upstream are configured only where the feed needs liberation or enrichment; the leaching-to-casting core applies to every precious-metal feedstock.

Steps 1 — Feed Sorting, Sampling and Assay. Incoming material is weighed, inspected, sorted by type and representatively sampled, then screened by XRF and assayed by fire assay to establish true metal content and lock in the correct route for the batch. Output: assay report, sorted feed and a batch route sheet.

Steps 2 — Mechanical Liberation and Physical Separation. Sorted feed is dismantled, shredded, crushed and milled to free the metal from plastics, fibre, ceramics and aluminium, then classified by screening, magnetic separation, eddy-current separation and air classification into a metal-rich fraction and clean non-metallic streams. Output: metal-rich concentrate, plus separated plastics/fibre and aluminium granules.

Steps 3 — Thermal Conditioning and Smelting Enrichment. The concentrate is pyrolysed and carbonised to drive off organics, then — where grades demand it — smelted and converted at 1200–1500 °C with flux so base metals report to slag while the precious metals collect in a molten alloy, which is water-broken into uniform granules. Output: granulated precious-metal alloy and disposable slag.

Steps 4 — Leaching and Gold Stripping. Alloy granules, slime or catalyst feed are dissolved in corrosion-resistant titanium, glass-lined or PPH reactors using gold-stripping chemistry, aqua regia, chloride/chlorine or nitric parting, bringing the target metals into a pregnant solution while gangue stays as residue. Output: precious-metal pregnant liquor and leach residue returned to enrichment.

Steps 5 — Selective Separation and Recovery. The pregnant liquor is clarified on filter presses and vacuum filters, then split into individual metals with P204 / P507 / C272 solvent extraction, activated carbon and ion-exchange columns, cementation, selective precipitation and electrowinning for the most dilute streams. Output: single-metal purified solutions, raffinate returned to leaching.

Steps 6 — Electrolytic Refining and Casting. Each purified stream is finished electrochemically — Wohlwill-type cells for gold, high-current-density cells for silver, rotating-cathode and pulsed electrowinning for PGMs and copper — then the refined powder or cathode metal is dried, fluxed, melted in induction furnaces and cast or vacuum-cast into bars, granules and shot. Output: Au / Ag 99.99%, Pt / Pd ≥ 99.95% bullion and PGM sponge.

Steps 7 — Off-Gas, Effluent Treatment and Assay Verification. NOₓ and acid-mist scrubbers, condensers, an alkali-pH polishing loop, wastewater neutralisation and residue dewatering treat every emission and bleed stream, while finished bars are re-assayed by fire assay and ICP-OES against the Certificate of Analysis. Output: certified product, compliant emission and recirculated water.

The main chain runs vertically through liberation → enrichment → leaching → separation → electrolysis → casting. Side branches return leach residue and raffinate to leaching, route slag, dust and scrubber solids back to enrichment, capture condenser and filter liquors for metal recovery, and send polished water to the rinse loop.

Product Features

  • Recovery and refining in one continuous route. Mechanical liberation, thermal enrichment, hydrometallurgical separation and electrolytic refining are engineered as a single line, so metal freed at the front end is not lost before it reaches the cathode.
  • Built for low-grade and awkward feed. The plant is designed around mixed, dilute and contaminated material — shredded board mix, slime, spent catalyst, sludge and dilute effluent — not just high-grade scrap.
  • Closed-loop reagent and water circuit. Raffinate and spent electrolyte return to leaching, scrubber wash water is neutralised and recirculated, and polish water is held below 10 ppm metal content, cutting reagent make-up and effluent volume.
  • Full-spectrum product split. Gold, silver, platinum, palladium and rhodium, plus copper, selenium and tellurium by-products, leave the plant as separate saleable streams rather than one mixed doré button.
  • Stable ultra-high fineness. Electrolytic finishing locks product at Au / Ag 99.99% and Pt / Pd ≥ 99.95%, avoiding the grade drift that chemical-only precipitation routes suffer batch to batch.
  • Corrosion-engineered contact parts. Dissolution, filtration and storage wetted parts are high-performance PPH with anti-ageing additive, PPH structural frames, titanium and titanium-clad-copper conductors, and glass-lined or titanium reaction vessels.
  • Low-loss design details. Enclosed transparent cell hoods with side extraction, electrolyte cooling to cut evaporation and acid consumption, condenser recovery of volatilised electrolyte, and vacuum liquid transfer instead of pouring.
  • Environmental compliance by design. Integrated NOₓ and acid-mist scrubbing, alkali polishing and closed-loop wastewater treatment keep emissions and effluent inside EPA and EU limits without a separate plant build.
  • PLC-controlled and data-logged. Temperature, voltage, current and bus-bar monitoring with parameter storage and interlocks gives repeatable batches, low operator dependence and an audit trail for assay control.
  • Skid-based and quick to commission. Pre-piped, factory-tested modules shrink site civil works and installation time compared with stick-built refineries.
  • Scales from pilot to industrial. Identical process logic from bench and pilot lines to full industrial plants, so a client can expand without re-inventing the route.

Technical Advantages

  • Recovery economics that work on real waste. The line is designed around the material recyclers actually hold — dilute, mixed and contaminated — so precious metals are captured at the front end instead of being diluted into a low-value concentrate and sold off-site at a discount.
  • Two enrichment routes, one platform. Pyrometallurgical concentration for heavily diluted feed and hydrometallurgical extraction for clean high-grade feed are both available on the same plant, so route selection follows the assay rather than the equipment list.
  • High-current-density electrolysis. Cathode current densities up to 1000 A/m² for gold and 750 A/m² for silver raise output per unit of cell volume, shorten batch cycles and reduce the amount of precious metal tied up in electrolyte inventory.
  • Electrolysis that survives silver and copper. Asymmetric DC-plus-AC superimposed power suppresses silver chloride build-up on the gold anode and keeps anodes dissolving completely, while controlled copper limits prevent cathode contamination — the two failure modes that flatten output in conventional gold cells.
  • Selective multi-metal split. P204 / P507 / C272 solvent extraction with ion exchange, cementation and selective precipitation separates a mixed PGM liquor into individual clean products, so platinum, palladium and rhodium are sold separately at full value.
  • Metal kept inside the circuit. Enclosed cells with side extraction, electrolyte cooling, condenser recovery of volatilised electrolyte, vacuum liquid transfer and closed-loop raffinate return together hold process losses to a fraction of a percent per cycle.
  • Dilute-stream recovery. Cyclonic electrowinning and ion-exchange recovery work from a fraction of a gram per litre upward, converting rinse water and bleed streams that would normally be treated as waste into saleable metal.
  • Compliance without a second plant. NOₓ and acid-mist scrubbing at ≥ 99.5% absorption, alkali polishing and closed-loop wastewater treatment are part of the package, keeping the refinery inside EPA and EU limits and protecting the operating licence.
  • Turnkey single-point accountability. One contractor owns assay, process design, equipment, pipework, commissioning and operator training, removing the integration risk of assembling a refinery from several vendors.
  • Documented metallurgical know-how. Each line is specified from real feed assays against a working process library covering gold, silver and the full platinum group, so route selection is engineering rather than guesswork.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is the difference between a precious metal recovery system and a refining system?
Recovery is the front end — liberating, concentrating and capturing precious metals from mixed, dilute or contaminated waste. Refining is the back end — separating those metals and purifying them to market fineness. This system integrates both in one line, which is why low-grade feed that a refining-only plant would reject can be processed economically on site.

Q2. What overall recovery rate can the system achieve?
Designed overall precious-metal recovery is above 95%, reaching into the 99% range on suitable high-grade and PGM-rich feeds. Recovery is protected by closed-loop raffinate and spent-electrolyte return, condensers on the cells, dilute-stream electrowinning and ion-exchange capture, so metal that would otherwise leave in effluent or fume is returned to the circuit. Actual figures are confirmed from your feed assay at design review.

Q3. What purity do the finished products reach?
Gold and silver are refined to 99.99%, with 99.999% gold available through a second electrolytic pass; platinum and palladium reach ≥ 99.95%, rhodium ≥ 99.90%, and by-product copper cathode ≥ 99.99%. Purity is set electrochemically rather than by chemical precipitation alone, so it is stable from batch to batch, and every consignment is released with a Certificate of Analysis from fire assay and ICP-OES.

Q4. What raw materials can the system process?
Printed circuit boards, shredded e-waste fractions and component scrap; copper and lead anode slime, dust and dross; spent Pd/Pt/Rh catalysts and automotive catalytic converters; jewellery, dental and mint scrap; electroplating baths, drag-out and rinse water; photographic and X-ray silver streams; metal-bearing sludge and dilute effluent; gold ores, concentrates and loaded carbon; and thermocouple, crucible, glass and furnace residues. The route is selected from the assay of your material.

Q5. Which metals can be recovered and separated?
All the precious metals — Au, Ag, Pt, Pd and Rh, with Ru, Ir and Os on request — plus valuable by-products including 99.99% copper cathode, selenium and tellurium. Solvent extraction, ion exchange and selective precipitation split a mixed feed into individual clean metal products rather than a single doré button.

Q6. Is the process cyanide-free and environmentally compliant?
The standard configuration is cyanide-free hydrometallurgy and ships with NOₓ and acid-mist scrubbing at ≥ 99.5% absorption, alkali polishing, wastewater neutralisation and closed-loop water recirculation with polish water held below 10 ppm metal. Treated gas and effluent meet EPA and EU discharge limits.

Q7. Does the plant need a large site or a dedicated building?
Throughput, footprint, headroom and utilities are engineered to your project, and the plant is delivered as skid-mounted, pre-piped modules, so required civils and site works are modest compared to a stick-built refinery. Layout, floor loading and ventilation requirements are fixed in the design package before manufacture.

Q8. How long does a batch take?
Gold chemical refining runs typically 8–12 hours; electrolytic gold refining is a 1–2 day cycle depending on anode grade and current density; high-current-density silver cells run continuously with automatic powder discharge. Higher cathode current density — up to 1000 A/m² for gold and 750 A/m² for silver — is what keeps cycle times short and metal inventory low.

Q9. What are the feed-quality limits for the electrolytic route?
Electrolytic gold refining suits crude gold above roughly 90% gold content with silver under about 6% and copper under about 2%; the chemical route handles lower grades, with silver held below about 8% to avoid silver chloride passivation. Feed outside these bands is still processed — it is routed through the upstream enrichment or chemical stage first, which is the reason this line integrates recovery with refining.

Q10. How are hazardous fumes and wastewater handled?
Every line includes multi-stage NOₓ and acid-alkali scrubbers rated for inlet concentrations above 30,000 mg/m³ and reducing them to below 150 ppm, condensers that recover volatilised electrolyte, and a neutralising closed-loop wastewater system with sludge dewatering. Reaction fume hoods, local extraction, acid-proof floor matting and gas-detection interlocks cover small-batch PGM work.

Q11. Do you provide installation, commissioning and operator training?
Yes. As a turnkey supplier we supervise erection, piping, ducting and electrical tie-in, run full commissioning on your own feed until contracted purity and recovery are demonstrated, and deliver on-site operator training covering safe operation, reagent handling, assay QC and maintenance, with complete SOPs and documentation.

Q12. What are the warranty terms and ongoing support?
A standard 12-month warranty from commissioning covers material and workmanship defects with defective-part replacement and free remote support, together with a guaranteed-performance clause confirming contracted purity and recovery at commissioning. Remote response is within 24 hours, genuine spares and process consumables are stocked, and lifetime technical support continues after warranty expiry.

Q13. How do I get a quote?
Send representative samples of your material together with your target throughput and site constraints. We run the assay, propose the optimal recovery and refining route, and return a firm quotation with flowsheet, equipment list, layout and pricing.
